Mulve is a fast, free, non-P2P way to download music

Filed under:

There isn't much else to say: Mulve is just a single 2MB, portable EXE that lets you download music. There's no UI to speak of, and it's completely unconfigurable. You just type in a band name or song title and... download.

The thing is, despite being free and tiny, the selection of music is insane. Lee found a bunch of crazy bands like The Wonderstuff, Mind Bomb, and Johnny Socko -- and for me, it even turned up plenty of hits for classical music by Mahler, Beethoven, and Mozart. All of the generic pop crap is there, too.

And it's fast! TorrentFreak reports that the servers might be located in Russia, but that didn't prevent Lee and I from maxing out our connections -- 600KB/s for him, and 2MB/s for me. There's no peer-to-peer in sight, either; these are just direct, fast downloads. If you need some more convincing, check the short video after the break.

For a service supported by just a single banner ad, it's surely too good to be true (and almost certainly unlicensed). It'll get shut down -- it's just a matter of whether it'll be thanks to Interpol, or due to too much traffic.

TomTom shows signs of life with Traffic Manifesto, aims to shorten European travel times by 5 percent

We're actually surprised that TomTom's still going strong after Google and Nokia unleashed their free satnav offerings many months ago. If you need some convincing, try this: following the launch of its Go Live 1000 series earlier this month, TomTom has just published a manifesto on its mission to encourage "better use of existing road capacity," and eventually "reduce journey times for everyone by up to 5 percent where there is traffic." Actually, by "everyone" TomTom means Europe, and according to its computer simulations, this would apparently require 10 percent of the continent's drivers to be hooked up to its HD Traffic active load-balancing service. There's no time frame given here, but it'll probably be awhile -- in the video after the break, CEO Harold Goddijn admits that out of TomTom's 45 million drivers, only about 1 million (or 2.2 percent) are currently connected to its live services. That said, this figure might get a little boost once TomTom starts providing free traffic data to radio stations and TV channels as part of its manifesto (in return for some cheap publicity, of course).

On a related note, TomTom has also just rolled out HD Traffic 4.0, touting its "higher accuracy, reporting up to 200 percent more traffic jams during rush hours than previously." Existing HD Traffic customers from eight nations -- including Switzerland -- need not fiddle with anything to utilize the new service, and by year's end seven more countries will join the party. Meanwhile, we're still waiting on TomTom's own take on the App Store -- who knows if the company will even survive long enough to reach its goals. We kid, we kid. Or do we?

Periodic Table of the Elements is a quick, slick HTML5 cheat sheet

periodictableoftheelements

HTML5 is here, which means Web developers now have a whole bunch of new tags and elements to play with. The Periodic Table of the Elements is an effective visual map of what the "new HTML" looks like. It's a comprehensive table, too; it contains both existing elements (such as the hyperlink tag, a) and elements that were just introduced in HTML5.

Elements are sorted by their function (root elements, metadata and scripting, text-level elements, forms, etc.), and when you hover over an element, you get a short description and a couple of links to further reference material (W3C Developer's Guide and W3Schools).

The whole thing feels very slick and is indeed implemented as an HTML table. One awesome feature is the How are they used? box. For example, you can punch in reddit.com and get a colorized map that shows exactly what HTML5 elements Reddit currently employs. It's not just a binary thing, either (uses/doesn't use). The more an element is used, the brighter it shines on the table. There's even a small instance count when you hover over it; I can tell you that Reddit uses seven input tags and 192 span elements on its main page. That's pretty slick!

Microsoft IE9 team engages nerds via reddit's IAmA section

reddit

IE9 is all about being open and "making the Web a more beautiful place." In that spirit, Microsoft has done something I've never seen a browser maker do before: its IE9 product team just went on reddit, directly talking to the community and answering questions.

These are the actual developers - not PR people (not that I have anything against PR people!). The thread is huge, and as you can expect, it's mostly composed of comments by the reddit community. But when you scroll down, comments from the Microsoft team start popping up. Some of them are very technical, which is great, and it's exactly what you wouldn't normally get from a spokesperson.

The IAmA session is going on right now, so if you hurry over, you might be able to participate and get some direct answers from Microsoft for your IE9-related questions!

HP Envy 15 and Envy 14 with Radiance display no longer available through HP, new CPUs ease the sting

Well, this is depressing. Earlier today we were tipped off on disappearance of the Envy 15 on HP's site, and according to the company it'll no longer be available through HP. Obviously, you can still snatch up the 15.6-inch version of HP's magnesium alloy rig through other e-tailers, but there's no telling how long they'll be in stock. The vanishing of the Envy 15 happens to make a lot of sense with the introduction of the Envy 14, but there's also something fishy going on with that one. The machine, which we do love so, doesn't have an option to be configured with HP's brighter Radiance panel any longer. HP wouldn't comment on future plans, but did confirm that the Radiance panel is no longer available on the 14. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground for further updates, but it's on you to bring the tissues next time.

Though it's little consolation for nature-loving outdoor laptop enthusiasts, there is a silver lining in this cloud -- the Envy 14's now showing a new set of powerful CPU options, up to and including that 2.66GHz Core i5-580M we've been lusting after for months.

[Thanks, Eric]
