Is Tech OCD Consuming Your Life? [Modernliving]

We're "constantly confronting the onslaught of information, and our brains are trying to make patterns out of the randomness," says TIME's Joel Stein. Obsessively tagged MP3s, meticulous photo folders, whitewashed inboxes—are you too struggling to stay digitally neat? More »

Ubuntu 11.04 switches to LibreOffice in latest daily builds

Back in September 2010, when Google, Novell and others announced the LibreOffice fork of OpenOffice, Canonical frontman Mark Shuttleworth said "The Ubuntu Project will be pleased to ship LibreOffice from The Document Foundation in future releases." In recent 11.04 Natty Narwhal daily builds, the change has finally taken place.

Download yourself a new Ubuntu 11.04 daily build .ISO, and you'll have LibreOffice installed from the get-go -- no PPA required. Natty is currently in the early stages, of course, so expect a few bumps in the road if you decide to take it for a test drive.

California Shouldn't Follow NY's Internet Tax Plan

California is facing budget problems yet again, and once again state lawmakers are hoping to shake down Internet retailers as a fast source of revenue. A bill introduced by Democratic Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner (AB 153) proposes to force out-of-state businesses to collect tax if they use an in-state company to generate leads.

Focus the taskbar and switch windows with the arrow keys in Windows 7

This week, we're running a series of keyboard tips and tricks that help you make the most of Windows 7. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The taskbar seems like it was meant to be used with the mouse only; it's a very visual thing, especially in Windows 7. But it turns out there's a way to "switch" to the taskbar and then work with it using the keyboard only! Hit Win+T to focus the taskbar, and then use the arrow keys to cycle between the icons. Whenever the focus switches to an application that's currently running, its Aero Peek pane will show up. To start an application that isn't running, press Enter.

What's nice about this system is that it takes your taskbar's orientations into account: for a vertical taskbar, Up/Down will switch windows, while Left/Right would activate the Aero Peek thumbnail pane; for a horizontal one, Left/Right would switch windows and Up/Down would activate the thumbnail pane.

This little nugget concludes our weekly Keyboard Tips series. I hope you've enjoyed it, and maybe even learned some new tricks! Check out Sebastian's list for a comprehensive rundown of many other hotkeys.

All Electric Bike Makers, Zero Motorcycles, Raise Another $2.4 Million

A Santa Cruz-based electric motorcycle manufacturer, Zero Motorcycles, raised another $2.4 million in private equity, according to a new SEC filing. Earlier this month, California's Scotts Valley Police Department started using the company's Zero DS bikes in urban patrols. According to a company press statement, its Zero DS has a range of up to 50 miles (80 km) and is highway legal, safe for off-road bike paths, and drives quietly due to its all-electric drivetrain, making it potentially advantageous for urban law enforcement. In late 2010, Zero Motorcycles expanded sales of its all-electric bikes to Australia. The company is selling its products in 32 countries today, including...

Choqok, the Twitter and Identi.ca client for Linux, adds loads of new features in v1.0

Choqok -- a fantastic, full-featured Twitter and StatusNet client for Linux -- has finally reached version 1.0. The new release adds support for a number of new sharing services, including Flickr, Posterous, YFrog, and Twitpic as well as a number of new URL shortening services. Choqok 1.0 also shows inline thumbnail previews of images and videos.

Want more? Choqok is also fully extensible thanks to its plug-in system, and a handful of very useful ones are included from the get-go. Tops among them: update filtering. So long, check-ins, now playings, and annoying prepubescent male vocalists! While we're on the subject, Choqok itself can tap into several Linux music players in case you want to share your tunes with the world. It'll also push your updates to supported IM clients as well, for automated status changes.

20-line Firefox fix will half start-up time, hopefully coming to nightly builds tonight

A 20-line patch looks set to cut Firefox's start-up time in half. The fix, which works by preloading Firefox's XUL library, could land in nightly builds as early as tonight. Unfortunately, the speed-up will only affect Windows users.

To be honest, it's a little odd that preloading DLLs hadn't been tried before. Prior to this fix, the XUL DLL was slowly loaded in 32KB bits, which really ground on slower-seeking hard drives. With a little trickery, the patch submitter managed to get Windows to load the DLL in juicier, faster 2MB chunks. The fix should improve load times on every computer, but it will definitely benefit slower computers more.

As far as we can tell, the fix hasn't landed in nightly builds yet. It should be soon, though: Mozilla's VP of Engineering, Mike Shaver, wants to "land this bad boy for Monday's nightlies" -- so keep an eye on Mozilla's public FTP dump tonight.

Incidentally, if you're not using the beta 10 nightly build yet, you should give it a go!

Android Quick App: Videocam Illusion

Videocam Illusion

Videocam Illusion for Android is a camera effects application that works with the video camera on your Android phone.  We've seen similar apps that manipulate still pictures, and while they're really fun and useful, Videocam Illusion takes it to the next level by adding effects on-the-fly to live video you shoot from your phone.  You can shoot up to 480p (720x480) video through the app, and the free version has four filters, four effects, and two masks to choose from.  You can also shoot video at 1.33x speed.

The paid version has 18 filters, 13 effects, six masks, and your choice of five different recording speeds.  They both work really well, saving the video to your SD card in .mov format for easy playback on your computer.  And since stock Android doesn't playback .mov files, the Videocam Illusion app includes a player to preview -- and show off -- your masterpiece.  There's a video demo, some screenshots, as well as the download link for the free version after the break.

Ubuntu Unity Plays a Frustrating Shell Game

The upcoming new Unity shell design for the next release of Canonical's Ubuntu 11.04 could change the face of the popular Linux desktop as we know it. How to hide the Ribbon menu in Microsoft Office applications

Ribbon
This week's series of tips will be focusing on handy little features for Microsoft Excel and Word. To see the previous tips, check our Tips index.

The new Ribbon interface on Office 2007 and 2010 is quite fancy, and once you get used to it, it's a lot of fun to use. One of its few downsides is that it's tall - far taller than a "traditional" menu. If you're working on a netbook or are otherwise pressed for screen space, it can sometimes be handy to collapse the Ribbon and make it as compact as a regular menu.

To collapse it, simply double-click one of the Ribbon's tabs, such as "Home". The whole thing will instantly shrink down to the line of tabs. Clicking a tab will temporarily expand it back. If you'd rather do the same thing using the keyboard, simply hit Ctrl+F1 (that's what I normally do).

Cheezburger Network secures $30 million in first round of funding, LOL

No, seriously: Pet Holdings Inc, the company behind I Can Haz Cheezburger, FAIL Blog, Graph Jam and others, has just raised $30 million from a bunch of venture capital investment groups.

The company, owned by CEO Ben Huh, bought I Can Haz Cheezburger from its founders in 2007. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, constantly adding new domains into the fold, and maintaining profitability "since its birth". This new round of funding, however, will let Cheezburger step up its hiring of new engineers, and enable the continued revitalization of its Web properties. Huh says a lot of the money will also be used "to experiment, to try to understand the market," a luxury the Network hasn't had for the last couple of years.

The Cheezburger Network, incidentally, attracts 16.5 million unique monthly visitors, which tally up a total of 375 million pageviews and 110 million video views.

Kongregate's Snake is an utterly classic low-fi Time Waster

snake
If you're looking for a groundbreaking time-waster, something you've never ever played before, a new concept in gaming - this post is not for you. But if you enjoy the odd bit of classic retro gaming, Kongregate's bare-bones implementation of Snake might be right up your alley.

What is there to say, really? You're a snake. I mean, you start life as a single chunky pixel, but as soon as you eat the red pixel, you grow. And then another pixel appears, you eat it, and grow some more.

If you've ever owned a Nokia phone, chances are it came with Snake built-in. The newer phones (even the crappier S60 models) come with a souped-up version of Snake, all 3d-looking, with the snake eating actual apples. This version is much more reminiscent of the older Snake version, which was strictly 2d. It doesn't have any sound effects, but it's super responsive, and very addictive. The reason for the low score on the screenshot isn't that I didn't play - it's that I played and played and played, each time thinking "this will be the one!" until I eventually realized if I don't take the screenshot and write it up now, I'll just end up playing all evening long. So there. Now, how much did you score?

Microsoft readying official Kinect SDK for Windows

Microsoft, according to (you guessed it!) sources familiar with its plans, is preparing to release the official Kinect SDK for Windows. This follows the release of the official Windows drivers last month from Microsoft Kinect's manufacturer, PrimeSense.

The release of an official SDK doesn't have immediate repercussions, but it does strongly hint at a gesture-controlled future for Windows 8. With over 8 million Kinects sold in just 60 days, and with Windows' almost complete penetration of the consumer market, there's a big potential market for Windows software that can utilize Kinect -- and, who knows, by the time Windows 8 rolls around in 2012 or 2013, maybe every household will already have a Kinect just waiting to be plugged in.

If you haven't seen it yet, take a look at the Kinect-powered Minority Reportesque user interface. With this SDK, it could be just a matter of weeks before similar software appears for Windows, in the form of an easy-to-install MSI.

Wolfram Alpha opens up API, makes it free for personal use

wolframalpha
Wolfram Alpha is already very powerful; just the other day I used it to chart United States crime rates, because I wanted to see at a glance if they've been going up or down over the last few years.

And now, Alpha has gone on to make all of its rich data freely available via a new API for developers. This means it's now easier than ever for developers to query Alpha and pull specific information back into their app for display to their users.

The API returns the result as a bunch of XML, which is very easy to slice and dice. You can either use Alpha's built-in charts and graphs, or just get the numbers and display them as part of your app.

Better yet, the API is free for personal use. I'm not sure what exactly qualifies as "personal use", but that does sound encouraging.

If this piqued your curiosity, you might be happy to know that Wolfram has put together a nice API Explorer. That's what you see in the screenshot: You can just feed it with any query you would feed into the "regular" Web interface, and then analyze the XML it spews out. Now we just have to wait and see what apps developer community comes up with!
