Sorry Entrepreneurs: You?re Probably the Rule, Not the Exception
I'm assuming most TechCrunch readers are far to Y-chromosomey to have seen it or even admit they've seen it, so I'll fill you in on the thrust of the film. Like most things in life, the simplest explanation is usually the right one: If a guy doesn't call, he didn't lose your number, he isn't away on business in Yemin, he wasn't kidnapped and held at gunpoint-- he just didn't want to call you. All these fairy-tale stories that lonely girls thrive on about how the jerky guy one day woke up and realized how great you are may have happened to somebody, sometime, but that person was the exception, not the rule. The somewhat cold message of the film is that you shouldn't live your life assuming you are the exception. (Of course as rom-coms go, the main character does end up being the exception, undercutting the wisdom of the point. But for the purposes of real life, let's pretend she didn't and moved on to someone else.)
Believe it or not, this movie came up in conversation at a dinner party in Silicon Valley the other night.

Creepy app uses Twitter and Flickr data to track anyone on a map
A good example of what's possible is Creepy, a desktop app which lets you track a Flickr or Twitter user's position on a map. Just pop in a Twitter or Flickr ID, and if the person has posted any geocoded data Creepy will pin the corresponding locations on a map. Satellite, street, and hybrid maps from Google and Virtual Earth are available, as are OpenAerialMap and OpenStreetMap.
Above, you can see where @scobleizer has been puttering around. Pop in anyone you want and then wait patiently -- Creepy analyzes quite a bit of data, so it can take a while for your results to appear. The mapping magic works as long as the user you search for has enabled geolocation features -- and that likely includes the vast majority of Twitter and Flickr users using a mobile app.
Creepy is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and the application's source code is also downloadable.

Plan B from Lookout Labs will find your phone after you've already lost it
A new twist on the "find my phone" genera of apps comes out today from Lookout Labs called Plan B. If the name didn't give it away, it's an application that tracks your phone that is installed remotely via the Android Market website after you've lost it. Using it is simple:
- Realize that your phone isn't where it should be, and a quick look under the car seats or in the couch cushions doesn't find it
- On your computer, head to the Android Market website
- Install Plan B
- Check your email
Once installed, Plan B will start sending text messages via email to the address of your Google account, with handy Google Maps links to your phone's location. This works even if GPS isn't enabled. Then it's a matter of seeing where it is, and deciding how to retrieve it. Pretty slick if you ask me, and it seemed to work perfectly on my Nexus S. To give it a test or keep the link handy, follow the break for the download.

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus
Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.
There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.
You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.
So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?
